Kenya: Travel Medical Insurance Now Required for Entry
Since October 5, 2026, foreign tourists need travel medical insurance to enter Kenya. The requirement applies to foreign nationals staying for less than 12 months. Exemptions include citizens of East African Community countries and holders of diplomatic passports.
Every traveler needs their own coverage, including minors. Only policies from insurers licensed in Kenya are accepted; foreign travel insurance is not. The policy can be purchased with the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or separately via eCitizen and is valid for 90 days. An ETA exemption does not exempt travelers from the insurance requirement. Proof of coverage is checked by airlines and immigration officers.
