The UK has already issued 13.4 million ETAs
In May 2025, the United Kingdom reported the issuance of 5.4 million Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs) since the launch of the program up to the end of March. However, new data from the Home Office shows a significant increase in approvals – mainly because the system has been available to citizens of the EU, EEA, and Switzerland since March 2025, for travel starting April 2.
The ETA system was introduced to enhance security standards and improve border processing efficiency. Similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada’s eTA, the UK ETA allows authorities to pre-screen visa-exempt travelers before they arrive in the country.
