China considers introducing an e-visa system
As part of a state strategy to revive inbound tourism and increase spending by foreign visitors, China is developing a new package of measures to regulate the entry of international travelers. For the first time, the possible introduction of an electronic visa system is explicitly being considered.
So far, China has differed significantly from other major travel destinations worldwide. While countries such as India, Thailand, the USA, the United Kingdom, and soon the European Union already rely extensively on electronic visas (e-visas) or electronic travel authorizations (ETAs), China’s system is still largely based on a traditional consular process with paper-based applications submitted through accredited visa centers.
